Simoom | Acrylic on canvas | 100 x 100 cm
The artwork "Simoom" is inspired by the ochre dunes of the Sahara desert and the "secret language of the world", as described by Paulo Coelho in his book, The Alchemist. In this story, the young shepherd boy, Santiago, is on a quest to find his destined treasure and learns the secrets of the desert by a wise alchemist along the way. Through his journey Santiago learns of "the soul of the world” and how to listen carefully when it is speaking to you. Forced into a life-threatening situation, young Santiago must turn himself into a simoom (a very hot and dry desert wind) to demonstrate that he, indeed, has learnt how to become one with the soul of the desert.
Pondicherry | Acrylic on canvas | 100 x 100 cm
Inspired by Yann Martel's Life of Pi (2001), the vivid colours of the story and the birthplace of the main character, Pi, in India.
