Gideon Nel, born in 1992 in Pretoria, is a South African artist, graphic designer and poet based in Stellenbosch, South Africa. He completed his Honours in Information Design at the University of Pretoria in 2015. He has worked as a graphic designer for various companies, including Cavalli Wine Estate, and has lectured in graphic design at Stellenbosch Academy of Design & Photography. Gideon was a designer and youth leader at Stellenbosch Gemeente from 2017 to 2019, where he developed new ways to communicate hidden treasures of the Biblical narrative. His passion for theology lies in the overlaps between spirituality, philosophy and art. He is currently busy with his Masters in Information Design through the University of Pretoria, focusing on the connections between metaphysical philosophy and visual communication.
Gideon founded Gideon Nel Studio in 2017 – a South African art and design studio specialising in interior artworks, graphic design, illustration and ceramics. His artistic vocation can be described as the pursuit of wholeness through an authentic, honest and vibrant visual language. Gideon is pursuing an impactful and explosive artistic career that is deeply rooted in and driven by academic research.
